Taihoan (Uji City Tea House)

At the municipal tea house Taihoan, named after the Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in across from it, you watch a teacher prepare tea, drink it with a seasonal sweet and then whisk matcha yourself. It lasts about 40 minutes and costs ¥3,600, and you sit at a table and not on your knees. You must book at least 3 days ahead using the form on the Uji tourism association website, and you get the ticket at the tourist center across from the tea house. Closed between 21 December and 9 January, and also on the last day of every month, or on the last weekday when that day falls on a weekend or a holiday.

Fukujuen Uji Kobo (Uji Tea Workshop)

At the Fukujuen workshop by the Uji River you grind tencha leaves on a hand-turned millstone, and then whisk and drink the matcha that comes out, with a sweet. It lasts about 40 minutes and costs ¥2,750 from elementary school age, and you pay at reception on the day itself. It is better to book, but when there is room they also accept people on the same day, from 10:00 until last admission at 15:00. The tea powder scatters, so it is worth coming in comfortable clothes, and the website is in Japanese only.
