Niseko: a ski day in Hirafu powder, apres-ski in a fridge, and an onsen in the snow
The resort that became Asia's international ski destination: 15 meters of dry snow a season, 4 resorts on one mountain on one ticket, Mount Yotei (the Fuji of Hokkaido) facing the runs, and in the evening a bar you enter through a fridge door. Expensive, and worth it.
A ski day in Niseko: a morning in the Grand Hirafu powder facing Mount Yotei, lunch in a hut on the slope, and in the afternoon a crossing over the ridge to Hanazono. In the evening a bar you enter through a fridge door, an izakaya in the village, and a soak in an onsen in Annupuri. A one-day Niseko United ticket, for all four resorts, costs ¥13,500 at the peak of the 2026-27 season, renting a full set ¥9,500 to ¥11,800, and the onsen ¥1,800. In the village you walk, and to the onsen and back you take a taxi, because the last shuttle to Annupuri leaves Hirafu at 20:20.

Getting there: From New Chitose Airport: Chuo Bus's ski bus to Hirafu, about 3.5 hours, ¥6,000 one way and ¥10,000 round trip in the 2025-26 season, by advance booking only. Bookings for the 2026-27 season open around October. Or the JR train to Kutchan, about 3 hours with a change at Otaru, ¥3,100, and from there a bus or taxi to Hirafu. Rent gear in the village, do not haul it. The Niseko United shuttle runs between the four resorts, free if you hold a lift ticket for that day.
Stop 1GearMust
Rhythm Japan: ski rental and boot fitting
You start with the rental. Rhythm is the biggest shop in Hirafu, with Australian staff, professional fitting and wide powder skis. In the 2026-27 season a full set with boots costs ¥9,500 a day in the standard package and ¥11,800 in the premium package, and less when you book online in advance. If you booked, you can pick up the gear from 13:00 the day before. You leave the gear with them overnight for free. Helmet: yes.

Niseko Grand Hirafu: the first runs in powder facing Mount Yotei
The 'Niseko United' ticket for all 4 resorts (Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, Annupuri): ¥13,500 a day in peak season, 24 December 2026 to 28 February 2027, and ¥12,600 in regular season, for the 2026-27 season. Hirafu alone is cheaper. The lifts open at 08:30, and on a morning after a night of snow the powder is untouched until 10:00. The gates to the off-piste terrain open according to the weather, and you do not duck under the ropes.
Ski down to lunch
Stop 3LunchRecommended
Lunch break on the slope in Hirafu
You sit on benches next to Japanese skiers. At peak hours, roughly 12:00 to 14:00, everything is full, so arrive at 12:00 sharp. The options:
Over to Hanazono
Stop 4SkiRecommended
Hanazono: the forest runs
Hanazono is the resort with the forest runs, where skiing between the trees is allowed in marked areas, and it has a park for children. The same ticket. Return to Hirafu over the ridge before the lifts close at 16:30, or by shuttle. Hirafu also has night skiing, 16:00 to 19:00, from 12 December to 22 March.
Back to Hirafu

Bar Gyu+: the bar you enter through a fridge door
The entrance to the bar is the door of a red Coca-Cola fridge from the 50s. Inside is a small bar with cocktails based on yuzu and Hokkaido apples, ¥1,500 to ¥2,000 a cocktail. No reservations. The bar is open only in winter, from early December to the end of March, and after 19:00 only adults are admitted. The opening hour is unclear: the bar's website says 19:00, and the Niseko tourism website says 15:00, so check on the day itself. If it is still closed, go straight on to dinner.

Stop 6DinnerRecommended
Dinner in Hirafu
Izakaya in the village: Hokkaido sashimi, yakitori and nabe hot pots, ¥4,000 to ¥6,000 per person. In season, book a table a week ahead, and that goes for every restaurant in Niseko in January. A no-reservation alternative: ramen in Kutchan, by shuttle. The options:
Ride to the onsen
Stop 7OnsenMust
Yugokorotei Onsen: an open-air bath in the snow
You finish at an onsen in Annupuri, with an outdoor pool between piles of snow and spring water that warms you to the bone. ¥1,800 per adult from 1 December to 31 March (¥1,200 the rest of the year), and a towel is extra, a towel set ¥400. Open 06:00 to 24:00, last entry at 23:00. An alternative in Hirafu: the onsen at the big hotels, about ¥1,500. Tattoos: not at most onsen in Niseko, and not here either. The last shuttle back leaves Annupuri at 20:04, so you return to Hirafu by taxi.
