Kumihimo Experience by DOMYO

Kumihimo is the braiding of silk threads into a cord, and Domyo has been working in it, according to its site, for 370 years. The Kagurazaka studio, Kumihimo Experience by DOMYO, is built for visits: on floor 1 a gallery with a kumihimo museum and shop, and space for trying it and for craftspeople's demonstrations, and on floor 2 a workshop for groups.

The English workshop lasts two hours and begins with a tour of the museum. Then you braid using the nara-gumi method, suited to beginners, in pure silk thread and on the craftspeople's tools. You finish on time and take a cord or a bracelet home the same day.

If you want more, you can choose other programs on the site, such as a bracelet braided on a round stand or braiding on a takadai, the tall stand. Do not get confused: Domyo's main shop is in another neighborhood, Ueno 2-11-1, where there is a separate studio tour, and this workshop takes place at Kagurazaka 6-75.

Good to know

  • The entrance is in an alley between a FamilyMart and a sweets shop. There is no parking for cars or bicycles.
  • The site does not say from what age you can take part. If you come with children, ask before you book.
  • Opening hours conflict between the site's pages, so if you come only for the shop or museum, call first.
