KITTE Marunouchi Rooftop Garden
KITTE was built on the remains of the Tokyo Central Post Office building from 1931, a modernist work by the architect Tetsuro Yoshida. The two wings that face the station, north and north-east, were preserved and built into a new tower, and KITTE opened in March 2013 as the first mall that Japan Post runs itself. The name of the building plays on 'kitte' (postage stamp in Japanese) and 'kite' (come). The interior design, by the architect Kengo Kuma, uses wood, roof tiles, woven fabrics and washi paper.
On floor 6 sits the roof garden, KITTE Garden, about 1,500 square meters of greenery, with a direct line of sight to the Marunouchi building of Tokyo Station: you see the platforms and the Shinkansen from above, so the garden is also popular with train fans and children. Entry is free.
On floors 2 and 3 is Intermediatheque, a science and nature museum of the University of Tokyo, also with free entry, with historic collections of the university museum: skeletons, old scientific instruments and anatomical models.
Good to know
- On weekdays the garden is open until 23:00. In rain or strong wind it closes without advance notice.
- Intermediatheque on floors 2 and 3, the University of Tokyo museum, is free and almost always empty. Use it to fill waiting time before you go up to the roof.
