Ikebukuro Otome Road
Otome Road (乙女ロード, 'maidens' road') is a stretch of about 200 meters of an ordinary ward road west of the Sunshine 60 tower: from the Sunshine-mae intersection, under the expressway, to the Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome intersection on Kasuga street. The shops are on one side. The name is not official, and it first appeared in the May 2004 issue of the magazine Pafu.
Anime shops were already operating in Ikebukuro in the 80s. According to nippon.com, in the 2000s a culture aimed at women developed here, around doujinshi, BL manga and otome games. The butler cafe opened in March 2005.
There is nothing to see here from the outside. The big shops sit in basements and on upper floors of buildings, and most of the merchandise is in Japanese. If you do not know the series, you will walk the street in five minutes. If you do, you can spend a whole afternoon here hunting for secondhand items.
