Kanazawa · Nagamachi
Nagamachi Samurai District
Lanes of mud walls and houses of samurai of the Maeda clan, near Korinbo. Along them flows the Onosho canal, which according to the tourism bureau was used to carry timber, and it is said to have played a large part in building Kanazawa Castle. From early December to mid-March the walls are covered with straw mats, komokake, so that snow and ice do not damage them.
Nomura House belonged to a family that received 1,200 koku from the clan. In the upper reception room there are door paintings by the court painters of Kaga, and the family's swords and armor are on display. The small garden received two stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan in 2009, and was ranked third in a ranking of Japanese gardens by an American journal of Japanese gardening in 2003. In the tea room, matcha has been served for ¥500 since October 2025.
