Nakabashi Bridge
The red bridge over the Miyagawa River links Honmachi street to Sanmachi, a few minutes' walk from Takayama Jinya. The current bridge was built in 1925, after the one before it was damaged in a flood, and the railings were painted red in 1965. It is about 35 meters long, and cherry and willow trees line the banks.
At the spring Takayama Festival, on 14 and 15 April, the floats stand one after another in front of the otabisho, the deity's resting station at the foot of the bridge, and work their karakuri puppets.
Good to know
- In 2026 the bridge was lit up in spring (1.4 to 24.5, 18:30-21:30), in summer (1.7 to 31.8, 19:30-21:30) and in autumn. Between late May and late June and in September there was no illumination.
- Miyagawa Morning Market starts a few hundred meters to the north, along the east bank, so in the morning you can combine the two.
