Miyagawa Morning Market
The morning market along the east bank of the Miyagawa River, between Kajibashi Bridge and Yayoibashi Bridge, is open every day of the year. According to the market association, the Takayama morning markets began in the middle of the Edo period. The association has about 40 sellers, most of them farmers from the area who sell what they grew and made themselves.
What is sold changes with the season: in summer tomatoes and cucumbers, in autumn new rice and apples, and in winter miso and preserved foods. All year round there are wild vegetables, homemade pickles, flowers, mochi, dango and woodwork.
The souvenir of Hida is the sarubobo, a red cloth doll with no face, and some stalls sell it here too. In the Hida dialect 'bobo' means a baby, and the name means 'monkey baby'. It is a charm for an easy birth, a good marriage and children's health, and in recent years it also comes in blue, pink and other colors.
Good to know
- On days of bad weather fewer stalls set up.
- The market does not ship home and does not take orders. What you buy, you carry.
- For those who keep kosher: the fresh fruit and vegetables from the farm women are the simple purchase here.
