Shiroyama Observatory
The viewpoint's Japanese name is 'Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck': a mountain fort stood on this cliff in the Middle Ages, and from its platform the whole village spreads out below. The Gifu Prefecture tourism website calls it the best photo spot of the village.
Entry is free. You get there by a shuttle of about 10 minutes or on foot, on a 20 to 30 minute path up the hill. The parking lot next to the viewpoint closed to cars in December 2023, after years of long-stay parking and traffic jams, and since then you go up only on foot or by shuttle.
On winter illumination evenings access to the viewpoint is controlled: you go up only with a dedicated viewpoint ticket, which is given only to overnight guests in the village and to people on some of the organized bus tours. Visitors are split into three time slots, and tripods are not allowed.
Good to know
- The shuttle does not run in heavy snow, on ice, or when visibility is low. According to the Gifu Prefecture tourism website the viewpoint is closed in winter, except on illumination evenings.
- On the illumination days in 2027 (11, 17, 24 and 31 January) the footpath closes at 15:45 and the shuttle runs only until 16:10, even for people who came in the morning.
- The footpath is good for the way down: take photos from above in the morning, then walk down into the village.
