Amerikamura
Amerikamura, 'the American village', is a district of narrow streets west of the Shinsaibashi arcade. According to the district's merchants' association, it all began in 1969, when the designer Mariko Higiri opened the cafe LOOP facing the square at the center. In the 70s shops opened in empty warehouses selling jeans, used clothing and records imported from the west coast of the United States, and the media called the area 'Amerikamura'.
The center is Triangle Park, officially Mitsu Park, a triangular square built after the war on a plot left between the roads. People meet there and eat takoyaki from the surrounding stalls, and according to the Osaka tourism bureau, young comedians sometimes perform there for free. Around the square are vintage and secondhand clothing shops, streetwear shops and cafes.
Good to know
- The district's big clothing shops, such as Kindal, KINJI and BIG STEP, open at 11:00.
