Osaka in one day: the castle, Kuromon Market, Shinsekai and Dotonbori at night
The city that eats until it drops (kuidaore). A castle in the morning, a market for lunch, a retro district for kushikatsu, and the neon of Dotonbori saved for after dark. Fewer temples, more food.
One day in Osaka, from the castle in the morning to the Dotonbori canal at night. After the castle you take the Metro to Kuromon Market, walk through Den Den Town to the lion shrine, ride to Shinsekai for kushikatsu, and save the neon of Dotonbori for after dark. Most of the way is on foot, about 7 km, with four short Metro rides. The Metro day pass, ¥820 on weekdays, is worth about the same as the day's rides added up, and on weekends and holidays, when it is ¥620, it pays off.
This day is part of: The Golden Route in a week: Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto and Osaka, day by day · Ten days in Japan: Tokyo, Hakone, the Alps, Kyoto and Osaka · Two weeks in Japan: Tokyo, Nikko, Hakone, the Alps, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka

On Shabbat: Shinsekai, Namba Yasaka, Hozenji Yokocho, Dotonbori and the signs: all free and within a 15-minute walk of each other if you sleep in Namba. The castle, Kuromon and Tsutenkaku are saved for another day.
Getting there: Start at Osaka Castle, at opening time, 09:00. The easy way is the Metro's Tanimachi 4-chome Station, and from there about 1.5 km on foot through the park to the tower, about 18 minutes. From Namba it is 10 to 13 minutes with a change, ¥240. From Umeda: the Tanimachi Line from Higashi-Umeda, no change, 12 minutes, ¥240. JR Osakajo-koen Station, on the Loop Line, is about a 20-minute walk from the tower, and the Metro day pass is not valid on JR.
Stop 1CastleMust
Osaka Castle: the tower, the moats and the park
You start at Hideyoshi's castle, rebuilt in concrete in 1931. Inside is a museum on the samurai era, and from the eighth floor there is an observation deck. Since April 2025 admission to the tower has doubled to ¥1,200, and children through junior high school get in free. The walls and the moats are the original, they are more impressive than the tower, and you can make do with them for free. Arrive for opening at 09:00, because the line for the elevator is long.
Ride to Kuromon Market
Stop 2MarketMust
Kuromon Market: crab on the grill, uni and fruit
Osaka's kitchen: about 150 shops in a covered lane of about 580 meters. Crab legs over charcoal, fatty tuna, strawberries for ¥1,000 and fruit juices. More expensive than it used to be, but the choice is big. You eat next to the stall.
Walk through Den Den Town
On the way you can stop at:
- Doguyasuji: A detour of a few minutes: an arcade of restaurant supply shops, knives, serving ware, noren, and plastic food models like the ones in restaurant windows.
Stop 3DistrictRecommended
Den Den Town and Namba Yasaka Shrine: the giant lion
Den Den Town is Osaka's Akihabara, a street of anime and electronics shops. From there you turn west to Namba Yasaka Shrine, with a stage shaped like a 12-meter lion head that swallows bad luck. Free, strange, and photogenic.
Ride to Shinsekai
Stop 4Retro districtRecommended
Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku: Osaka of 1912
A district built as a 'new world', with Paris to the north and Coney Island to the south, and frozen in time. Tsutenkaku Tower has cost ¥1,500 since April 2026, including the open-air deck, and on the 5th floor sits the Billiken statue, whose soles people rub. Kushikatsu restaurants on every corner, and the only rule: no double-dipping in the shared sauce.
Down to Daruma
Stop 5FoodMust
Kushikatsu Daruma: the original fried skewers
According to the restaurant, kushikatsu was invented here in 1929: skewers of meat, shrimp, sweet potato and cheese in a crisp coating. This is a snack, not a meal, because dinner is still waiting. Every diner orders at least one drink. The main branch is small, and Daruma has more branches in Shinsekai.
Break
A rest at the hotel, if you are staying in Namba or Shinsaibashi
The day starts at 09:00 and ends at 21:30, and that is long. If you are staying in Namba, go back to the hotel now: from Dobutsuen-mae Station on the Midosuji Line to Namba, 5 minutes, ¥190, and in the evening walk from the hotel to Dotonbori. If you are staying in Shinsaibashi: the same line, 7 minutes, ¥240, and from the station about 10 minutes on foot to Dotonbori. To Umeda the ride is 14 minutes, ¥240, and back to Namba 8 minutes: with the walking that is about 20 minutes each way, and you are left with less than an hour at the hotel. If you are staying farther away, or do not want to go back, continue to Amerikamura, and the coffee in the square is your rest. At 18:00 you head out to Dotonbori.
Ride to Amerikamura
Stop 6BreakIf there is time
Amerikamura: coffee and vintage before the neon
Osaka's youth district, the equivalent of Harajuku: American vintage shops, sneakers and coffee. At Triangle Park you sit with a coffee and watch the fashion.
Down to Dotonbori
Stop 7DistrictMust
Dotonbori: the Glico man, the giant crab and the canal
When it gets dark the signs light up: the running Glico man, seen from Ebisubashi Bridge, and Kani Doraku's mechanical crab. Very crowded, so keep an eye on your bag. Behind it, Hozenji Yokocho lane: stone, lanterns, and a moss-covered Buddha statue that people pour water over. Zuboraya's pufferfish, which appears in old guides, came down when the restaurant closed in 2020.
Walk to dinner
Stop 8DinnerMust
Dinner in Dotonbori
Dinner is okonomiyaki, the dish of Osaka, and for dessert takoyaki from a stall by the canal. If you do not want to wait in line, book a table at Chibo. The options:
Down to the boat
Stop 9NightIf there is time
Tombori River Cruise: 20 minutes on the canal under the signs
You finish on the water: an open boat that leaves every half hour, 11:00 to 21:00, from the pier next to the Don Quijote with the yellow wheel. 20 minutes between the lit signs, with a guide on board. ¥2,000 per adult, included in the Osaka Amazing Pass. Pass holders exchange it at the ticket office for a timed ticket, and tickets for the evening sailings run out early, so exchange it already at midday. From the pier it is about 7 minutes on foot to Namba Station, and if you are staying in Umeda it is the Midosuji Line, 8 minutes, ¥240.
