Kuromon Market

Kuromon Market is a covered street of about 580 meters south of Sennichimae Avenue, with about 150 shops. According to the Osaka tourism bureau, the market began around 1822, when merchants gathered by a black gate of Enmyo-ji temple and sold fish that came from Sakai and the Kii Peninsula. The name Kuromon means 'the black gate'.

The temple and the gate burned in the fire of 1912, and the market burned again in the bombings of World War II and was rebuilt after it. Because of the restaurant chefs who shop here, it has many fish and fugu shops. Today many of the stalls grill and serve on the spot: sushi, rice bowls with fish, tempura, and skewers of meat and fish.

Good to know

  • Many shops have a small seating corner, where you eat what you buy.
  • At the end of December, before the Japanese New Year, the market is especially crowded with shoppers for the holiday meals.
  • Most of the ready food in the market is fish, seafood and meat, and there is no kosher place in it.
