New York Joe Exchange Shimokitazawa

New York Joe Exchange is a secondhand clothing shop that buys from whoever brings clothes in, any brand and any decade, even without a brand. What it buys goes onto the racks, so the mix is wide: Japanese and imported brands, streetwear, clothes from the United States and Europe, and vintage, for men and women, plus shoes, bags and accessories.

The shop is on the ground floor of the Tochikura building, on the shopping street Shimokita Ichibangai, at Kitazawa 3-26-4. According to Time Out and San-Tatsu, the place was a neighborhood public bathhouse, and the shop opened in it in 2010, a year after it closed. The shop's website does not mention this, and the sources do not say what remains of the structure.

Every item in the shop costs up to 10,000 yen before tax, and according to the shop's blog from October 31, 2026, the highest price is ¥10,890. The average price, according to the website, is 2,000 to 3,000 yen. Prices are not uniform: each item is priced separately.

Good to know

  • On the first Sunday of every month everything is half price, in all three of the chain's shops (Shimokitazawa, Kichijoji and Shibuya). On that day the shops do not buy from customers, the shop asks people not to wait outside before 12:00, and you can take up to 10 items into the fitting room.
  • If you bring clothes to sell, you get 30 percent of the shelf price the shop sets in cash, or 60 percent as store credit. Change from store credit is not returned. You need ID, and a passport works.
  • No returns, no holding items and no shipping. An item posted on the blog or on Instagram sells quickly, and the shop recommends calling first: 03-5738-2077.
  • The official website does not say whether tax-free shopping is available. If you are buying a lot, ask at the counter before paying.
