Day trip to Himeji: Mount Shosha, the Koko-en gardens and the White Heron Castle
Japan's largest original castle, half an hour by shinkansen from Osaka and about 45 minutes from Kyoto. In the morning a ropeway to the mountain temple where 'The Last Samurai' was filmed, at midday down into town, 9 samurai gardens beside the castle, and in the afternoon the white maze of gates until closing time. Dinner near the station.
A day trip to Himeji, from Osaka or from Kyoto, in one direction: from the mountain into town. You start the morning by bus and ropeway up Mount Shosha, to the mountain temple of Engyo-ji, while it is still quiet. At midday the bus takes you down to the castle gate, you eat facing it, wander through the gardens of Koko-en, and in the afternoon you enter the white castle and stay until closing time. From there you walk to the station for dinner, and in winter you see the castle light up on the way. Most of the day is on foot: in the forest on the mountain, in the gardens and inside the castle. The rides: the shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, ¥3,220 each way in a non-reserved seat, or ¥1,460 on JR's fast train from Osaka Station, and the bus to Mount Shosha, ¥320 each way. Between 5 February and 28 October 2027 the ropeway is closed, and the details are at the Mount Shosha stop.

Stop 1Mountain templeRecommended
Mount Shosha and Engyo-ji Temple: the temple of 'The Last Samurai'
You go up on the ropeway, 4 minutes, ¥1,200 round trip. The first car goes up at 08:30, and then every 15 minutes. From the upper station it is a 20-minute walk through the forest to a temple complex from the 10th century, with wooden halls on pillars, where scenes from 'The Last Samurai' were filmed. In the morning, before the midday buses, it is quiet here. Admission is ¥800, plus ¥500 for the round-trip minibus within the complex, up to below the Maniden hall. A combined ticket, the 'Shosha Shiromachi Pass', costs ¥2,700: admission, the ropeway round trip and buses for two days, plus a ¥100 voucher. With separate tickets the same thing costs ¥2,640, almost the same price. The ticket is digital and bought online. The temple is open 08:30 to 18:00 from spring to autumn, and until 17:00 in winter. From 5 February to 28 October 2027 the ropeway is closed for a major renovation. Then you go up on foot on the eastern trail, about 50 minutes of climbing from the lower station, or you skip the mountain and start the day at the castle at 09:00, followed by lunch and Koko-en.

Stop 2LunchRecommended
Lunch break facing the castle
You get off the bus facing the Otemon Gate. Himeji's dish is anago, grilled conger eel on rice. You eat it right across from the gate, or inside Koko-en garden, facing the koi pond and the waterfall. The options:

Stop 3GardenRecommended
Koko-en Garden: nine gardens where the samurai houses stood
Nine walled gardens, built in 1992 on the remains of the samurai residences: a tea garden, a pine garden, a flower garden, and a pond with huge carp. Entry is ¥400, and it is included in the combined ticket with the castle. Open 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30. In the tea house you drink matcha for ¥500. In the autumn foliage season, from 17 November to 6 December 2026, the gardens are open until 20:00 and lit up from sunset, and then you can swap: the castle first, and the gardens after it.

Himeji Castle: 6 floors, 83 buildings, zero reconstruction
A National Treasure and World Heritage site that survived wars and earthquakes without burning. A maze of gates and white walls built to confuse attackers, and a 6-story keep that you climb on steep stairs, in your socks. Since 1 March 2026 admission is ¥2,500 per adult, and children up to 18 get in free. The price depends on where you live, not on citizenship: residents of Himeji pay ¥1,000. A combined ticket with Koko-en is ¥2,600. The castle is open 09:00 to 17:00, and last entry is at 16:00, so you go in by 14:00 and stay until closing. During the sakura season and Golden Week there is a two-hour line, and then numbered entry tickets are handed out: on those days you flip the day, the castle at 09:00 and Mount Shosha in the afternoon. The castle is lit up from sunset until 24:00, and at 20:00 and 21:00 there is a 15-minute colored light show. In winter the sun sets about when you leave, and you see the lighting from the Sannomaru plaza on the way to the station. In summer it comes on only after dinner, and the plaza is a 15-minute walk from the station.

On the way you can stop at:
