Kobe: the herb garden by ropeway, the foreigners' houses of Kitano, Chinatown and Kobe beef
30 minutes from Osaka, a port city between mountain and sea: a ropeway to a garden and a viewpoint, the foreign merchants' houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, baozi in Chinatown, real Kobe steak at lunch, and the harbor at sunset.
A day trip from Osaka to Kobe, a port city between mountain and sea, from the top down. You ride the ropeway up to the herb garden, walk down to the merchants' houses of Kitano, eat Kobe beef in Sannomiya, and continue through Chinatown and the old settlement district to the harbor, for sunset and dinner. You finish at the night view on Mount Rokko, or head back to Osaka. In Kobe itself everything is on foot, about 6 km and most of it downhill, and the ride from Osaka is about half an hour each way.

Stop 2Historic districtRecommended
Kitano Ijinkan: the foreign merchants' houses
Kobe port opened to trade in 1868, and from the late eighties of the 19th century the foreign merchants built houses on the Kitano slope. About 16 are open to the public, some of them museums, ¥500 to ¥1,100 each, and there are combined tickets. The streets themselves are free and pretty, and it is enough to go into one or two: the city's Weathercock House and Moegi House, ¥800 for both. There is also a Starbucks in a house from 1907.
Down to lunch in Sannomiya
On the way you can stop at:
- Ohel Shelomo, the Kobe synagogue: A detour of a few minutes west within Kitano: the oldest active synagogue in Japan. This is an active community and not a tourist site, so you arrange a visit or a prayer service in advance with the Jewish Community of Kansai.
Stop 3LunchMust
Lunch break in Sannomiya
Today's lunch is Kobe beef, wagyu from Hyogo Prefecture to a set standard, and you ask to see the certificate. If you do not eat meat, there are alternatives here too. The options:
On to Nankinmachi
Stop 4ChinatownRecommended
Nankinmachi: baozi and bubble tea
A small, dense Chinatown: pork baozi from Roshoki (a permanent line, ¥120 each), tea eggs, sticky rice. Roshoki's old shop is being rebuilt until around November 2026, and in the meantime it sells from its sister shop facing the plaza. This is dessert after the steak. The dragon dances are at the Chinese Spring Festival. You finish at the plaza with the pavilion.
Break
A coffee break near Nankinmachi
There is no hotel to go back to, and the day is long: 09:30 to 21:00, plus about half an hour on the train each way. If you are tired, skip the walk through the streets of the settlement district and sit for an hour in a cafe. Nishimura in Motomachi is a minute from the Nankinmachi plaza, open 09:00 to 22:00, and closed on the last Monday of the month. Salon 15, on the first floor of Building No. 15, serves cakes and tea, 11:00 to 20:00. From there continue to Meriken Park for sunset.
Up to Motomachi
Stop 5DistrictIf there is time
Motomachi and Kyu-kyoryuchi: the old banks and Kobe's coffee
The former foreign settlement: old bank and office buildings that became brand shops and cafes, and Building No. 15 from about 1880, the only one left from the settlement era. The 'Nishimura' coffee house, from 1948, is a local institution, and the covered Motomachi arcade runs parallel.
Down to the harbor
On the way you can stop at:
- Kobe City Museum: In the former Yokohama Specie Bank building from 1935, with Doric columns. From 10 October to 13 December 2026 it shows an exhibition on Tove Jansson and the Moomins, ¥2,200. 09:30 to 17:30, and closed on Mondays.
Stop 6HarborRecommended
Meriken Park and the Port Tower: the earthquake memorial
You reach the harbor park, with the BE KOBE sign for photos, the maritime museum, and the corner of the pier left in ruins from the 1995 earthquake as a memorial. The red Port Tower reopened in 2024 after renovation, with an open rooftop (¥1,200). You watch the sunset from the pier.
Walk to Harborland
Stop 7DinnerRecommended
Dinner in Harborland
Mosaic is an open mall on the water, with terraces overlooking the harbor, the Ferris wheel and the lit Port Tower. Its shops close at 20:00, and the restaurants are open until 22:00. The options:
Ride to Mount Rokko
Stop 8NightIf there is time
Back to Osaka, or: the Mount Rokko night view
If you stay, ride the Rokko Cable up to the Tenrandai viewpoint, next to the upper station, the 'ten million dollar view'. The cable car leaves on the hour, at 20 past and at 40 past, and the ride is 10 minutes. ¥1,550 round trip, and the last cable car is at 21:10, so if you go up at 20:20 you have about 40 minutes at the top. Head back on bus 16 to Hankyu Rokko, about 14 minutes, ¥230, and from there the Hankyu train to Umeda, 26 minutes, ¥330. If you do not go up the mountain, head back from Sannomiya on the Hankyu train to Umeda, 27 minutes.
