Suntory Museum of Art

The Suntory Museum of Art was founded in 1961 by the Suntory company, and moved in 2007 to its current location in Tokyo Midtown, in a building by Kengo Kuma. Its motto is 'Art in Life', and it focuses on traditional Japanese and Asian art: ceramics, glass, lacquer and kimono textiles, from a collection of about 3,000 items that includes one National Treasure, an old lacquer box.

There is no permanent collection hall: the museum shows several changing exhibitions a year. The current exhibition, on paintings by Buson and Goshun and tea utensils from the collection of the Itsuo Museum, runs until 8 November 2026, and some works change partway through.

Inside the museum there is a real tea room that is used for programs related to the tea ceremony. The location inside the Midtown mall itself makes it easy to combine with shopping or a meal, even on a day when the gallery is closed.

Good to know

  • The museum sits inside the Midtown mall itself, so even on a day when it is closed you can still shop and eat in the same place.
  • On Fridays and Saturdays it is open until 20:00.
