teamLab Borderless

teamLab Borderless first opened in Odaiba in June 2018, and in 2019 it was entered in Guinness World Records as the most visited museum in the world dedicated to a single group of artists. The museum in Odaiba closed in August 2022, and a new, larger version opened at Azabudai Hills on 9 February 2024.

There is no map and no fixed route: the works themselves move between the rooms, respond to the presence of people, and sometimes blend into each other. Among the permanent installations: the infinite world of bubbles (Bubble Universe), the room of resonating lamps, and the infinite world of crystals. The central idea is art without borders between one work and another, and without a border between the viewer and the space.

Good to know

Dark clothes reflect less in the mirror rooms, and comfortable shoes matter because you walk a lot without sitting down.
With no map or route signs, it is easy to miss a room without noticing. If you want to see everything you need more than two hours.
Buy on the website in advance: on weekends tickets sometimes sell out a few days ahead.

Hours: 08:30-21:00, on some days until 22:00, last entry one hour before closing. Closed on some days during the year, per the calendar on the website. The next ones: 24 November, 8 December, 13 and 19 January

Best time: A weekday morning, less crowded. Weekends sell out days in advance
Station: Kamiyacho (Hibiya Line) exit 5, about 2 minutes; or Roppongi-itchome (Namboku Line) exit 4, about 6 minutes, 2 min walk
Booking: A timed ticket from the official website is required, especially for weekends

A long-established taiyaki shop on the Azabu-Juban shopping street, with a thin, crisp shell and azuki beans all the way to the tail. ¥180 to take away, ¥200 to eat in. Closed on Tuesdays and on the third Wednesday of the month.
