Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower was completed in December 1958, at a height of 333 meters, 13 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower that inspired it. The orange and white color is not a design choice but a Japanese aviation law that requires such marking on tall structures. Until the rise of the Skytree in 2012 it was the tallest structure in Japan, and it still serves as a backup broadcast for Tokyo's television and radio stations.

The observatory has two levels: the Main Deck at 150 meters, with a glass floor in one of the corners, and the Top Deck at 250 meters, which you enter in small guided groups with an ascent at a fixed time. The Top Deck ticket covers both levels, 150 and 250 meters, and the Main Deck can also be bought on its own. The entry price is the same every day of the week, unlike the Skytree, which has moved to dynamic pricing.

At the base of the tower sits the Foot Town building, with souvenir shops and food.

Good to know

  • The tower's 600 outdoor stairs do not save you the entry fee, they only replace the elevator: you still buy a regular ticket for the deck. You can climb them only on weekends and holidays, 09:00-16:00, you can walk down every day until 20:00, and at the end you get a certificate of completion.
  • The Main Deck costs ¥1,500 both on the website and at the ticket counter. Only for the Top Deck do you pay ¥200 more at the counter.
  • The Top Deck is sold as a group tour with a fixed time, not walk-in entry like the Main Deck.
  • You see Tokyo Tower up close, with the Skytree in the background, from the Tokyo City View observatory at Roppongi Hills, on a separate ticket.
