Odaiba Seaside Park
The name Odaiba comes from 'daiba' (台場), the cannon batteries the shogunate built in 1853 to 1854, after Commodore Perry arrived in Tokyo Bay with the 'black ships'. Of 11 planned batteries, six were completed. Battery No. 3 was joined to the land by reclamation and opened in 1928 as Daiba Park, and you walk into it. Battery No. 6 is kept as a closed island, and you see it only from the beach.
The park opened in 1975, and at its center is an artificial sand beach of about 800 meters facing Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo skyline. At one side of the beach stands a bronze Statue of Liberty about 11 meters tall, placed in December 2000 and cast from a mold of the original statue in Paris.
For most of the year swimming is banned, and you may only wade near the beach house. The exception is a few days every July, when Minato ward runs 'Odaiba Plage': in 2026 from 17 to 21 July, 14:00 to 19:00. The park itself is free.
