Miraikan
The museum is closed completely for renovation from 1 October 2026 to 22 April 2027, and reopens on 23 April 2027. The closure includes the restaurant, the cafe and the shop. According to the announcements, after the renovation there will be new permanent exhibitions on the genome and the brain and a new film in the dome theater.
Miraikan, the national museum of science and innovation, opened in 2001. Its symbol is Geo-Cosmos, a globe about 6 meters across in the atrium, covered with 10,362 organic EL panels, which shows the Earth with cloud images from weather satellites loaded every day.
Honda's robot ASIMO, which made the museum famous, appeared here from 2002 and gave its last show on 31 March 2022, after 15,466 demonstrations. Old guides still send people to it.
Good to know
- Check your trip dates against the closure: anyone arriving before 23 April 2027 will find the museum closed.
- You enter the dome theater from 10 minutes before the screening, and once it starts there is no entry. Seats are assigned.
- On Saturdays entry is free up to age 18, which makes the museum especially cheap for families.
